How does web hosting work?

When someone visits your site, their browser asks a server for it. Hosting is everything that happens next: DNS points them to the right place, the server runs WordPress (PHP talking to a database), and the finished page travels back. What separates good hosting from bad is how fast all that happens — the caching, the server tuning, the distance to your visitor (that’s what a CDN fixes) and how many neighbours share the machine.
